TIPS FROM A REAL BRIDE-TURNED-TRAVEL AGENT
Planning a destination wedding means making a lot of exciting—but sometimes overwhelming—decisions. One of the most personal? Hiring your wedding photographer.
In this episode of the Be All Inclusive podcast, we sat down with Taylor Martz, owner of Vibe Thrive Travel, to talk about one of the most emotional (and important) wedding decisions: choosing who captures your big day. Taylor brings a rare perspective—she was a BAI bride first, and now she helps other couples plan their own dream weddings. Here's what she (and the rest of our team!) want every couple to know about finding the right photographer.
RESORT VS. INDEPENDENT PHOTOGRAPHER
Let’s start with a truth bomb: not all resort photographers are bad—but you often don’t know who you’re getting.
Many resorts contract with large photography companies that assign someone from their team to your wedding date. That means the person photographing your wedding could also be working another job at the resort that day. You won’t know their style, experience, or personality until they show up with a camera.
When you hire an independent photographer, you’re choosing someone because of their style and personality. You’ve seen their portfolio. You’ve had a consultation. You feel comfortable around them—which is huge on a day that can be emotional and fast-paced.
“Photography is a personal choice. It’s not just about skill—it’s about connection,” shared James, BAI Founder and former wedding photographer. “The right photographer puts you at ease. And that makes a big difference in your photos.”

THE CASE FOR THE FIRST LOOK
If you’re considering a destination wedding, chances are you already like doing things a little differently. So here’s a fresh idea: have a first look.
Taylor shared that skipping a first look was her biggest regret from her first wedding. The couple was rushed post-ceremony and missed cocktail hour, sunset lighting, and quality time with guests—all to squeeze in photos.
“When I look back, I didn’t even enjoy the photo session. I had a headache and we were stressed,” she said. “I never hear brides regret doing a first look. I only hear regrets from those who didn’t.”
Doing a first look can:
-
Ease pre-ceremony nerves
-
Maximize golden hour lighting
-
Give you more time with guests
-
Result in more relaxed, authentic photos
Plus, it lets you savor a private moment before the whirlwind of the day begins.
HOW TO ACTUALLY FIND THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER
If you’ve decided you want a photographer who isn’t from the resort’s preferred vendor list, here’s how to find one who fits your style and budget:
-
Use Instagram strategically: Search your resort’s location and browse tagged photos. Many independent photographers post from the venues they shoot at regularly.
-
Join Facebook groups: BAI operates several destination wedding Facebook groups where couples share reviews, photos, and vendor recommendations.
-
Ask to see a full wedding gallery: A photographer’s Instagram shows their best highlights. A full gallery shows how they handle everything—from prep to party.
-
Avoid being fooled by stylized shoots: These are “fake weddings” with models and endless time. Real wedding days move fast. You want someone who can work under pressure.
-
Do a destination engagement shoot: If you’re visiting the resort before your wedding, schedule a shoot with your photographer. It’s a great way to build a relationship and test their style.
DON'T LET THE SUNSET SNEAK UP ON YOU
Destination weddings often take place in stunning outdoor locations—but that means lighting matters more than ever.
Many couples don’t realize that if your ceremony ends near sunset, you might lose the chance for well-lit portraits. Talk to your planner and photographer about the best ceremony time to get the photos you want. Pro tip: the “golden hour” (right before sunset) is magic.
“We always help our couples choose ceremony times with lighting and flow in mind,” Taylor said. “You don’t want to look back and realize you missed your own rooftop cocktail hour because it got dark too soon.”
A NOTE FROM TAYLOR:
"WHY I JOINED BAI AFTER BEING A BRIDE"
Taylor’s love for destination weddings runs deep—not just because of her own experience, but because she saw how impactful it is to have real support during planning.
“I didn’t just want to be in travel because I love travel. I wanted to recreate the experience I had with BAI for other couples,” she said.
FINAL THOUGHTS: IT'S YOUR WEDDING, MAKE IT PERSONAL
From your photographer to your cake choices, your wedding day should reflect who you are. Don’t get boxed in by what’s traditional or easy. Whether that means doing a first look, skipping the cake, or hiring a photographer you truly vibe with—go with what feels right.
